While France has made charging stations compulsory at motorway service areas from 2023 and Great Britain is imposing them near new houses and buildings, a technology under development could make it possible to do without them. On the Arena del Futuro, a 1050-metre circuit on the A35 motorway, 65 km from Milan, a surface capable of powering the batteries of electric cars is being tested.

This is called “Dynamic Electric Vehicle Charging”. Thanks to copper coils rolled out under the asphalt and a few sensors, powered by 1 MW of electrical power, the energy from the electrical network is transmitted to the vehicles moving on the track. In Italy, the project is “at an advanced stage”, according to Stellantis, but trials have begun in the US, Germany and Sweden. The automotive group is running an electric Fiat 500 and an Iveco E-Way bus on the Arena del Futuro. The result of the multinational’s collaboration with Italian companies and universities, the circuit uses ElectReon technology. Perhaps the end of the weak battery

However, vehicles need to be equipped with a special receiver that transfers energy from the road infrastructure to the battery to accommodate this technology. 30 billion by 2025 in electrification and software development, the Stellantis Group will also be able to provide these vehicles with advanced connectivity for constant information exchange with the connected and electrified roads. From invention to large-scale commercialization, in the long term, this could simply avoid stopping at motorway service areas, saving time for all automobilists.
