Electric Cars, Why Tires Are Different

The arrival of the electric car has given a new impetus to tires innovation, requiring products with new characteristics, capable of meeting different needs in terms of weight, size and performance.

The battery increases the weight of a vehicle, so it is clear that tires designed for an electric car have a more robust structure to cope with the increased stresses. The presence of the battery under the floor of all-electric vehicles with a dedicated platform lowers the center of gravity and brings it closer to the road.

Manufacturers are working on a reinforced belt and carcass, and are able to create an internal structure with particularly strong fabric meshes and metal filaments. To reduce tire deformation, special attention is also paid to the design of the bead – the part that connects the tread and sidewall – which is made with different compounds as needed.

Noise is another aspect that tire manufacturers pay special attention to when it comes to electric car tires. A product that generates noise while driving is immediately more disturbing inside, to the detriment of acoustic comfort. That’s why electric car tires have treads and compounds that limit the decibels resulting from contact with the asphalt.

The range of tires for electric cars is rapidly expanding and, as is already the case for internal combustion engines, is leading to increasingly specific products. In fact, some manufacturers are working closely with tire makers to produce tires for specific models.
