Nio has announced its intention to launch a new brand of affordable electric cars on the European market. The Chinese automaker aims to offer “zero-emission” vehicles at competitive prices.

The two new brands, provisionally named Alps and Firefly, will primarily target the European market. Firefly aims to market electric cars starting at €27,000, allowing Nio to compete with the upcoming Volkswagen ID.2 and the possible Tesla Model 2.

According to William Li, CEO of Nio, there is strong demand in Europe for smaller vehicles. Both brands will start in Europe before expanding to other markets, including China.

Alps is also intended for the European market but with higher-end models. Both new brands will benefit from Nio’s battery exchange technology, which allows for battery changes in less than five minutes.

However, as both brands will offer smaller cars, they will not be able to use existing infrastructure and will require the construction of a new battery exchange station network.

To reduce costs, production of the new models will take place in China, in a factory located in the Anhui province. Nio is seeking partners for these two new brands, and production will only begin once the Nio brand has reached a certain sales volume.
