One study shows that electric cars have several positive effects on human health. Ecology would not be the only area that benefits from these zero-emission vehicles.
The Keck School of Medicine, the medical school at the University of Southern California, has linked the amount of electric cars in certain areas with recorded levels of pollution. They then added to this data visits to the emergency department because of asthma, and finally studied these data from 2013 to 2019.
The conclusion is clear: emergency department visits have declined significantly in areas where electric car sales are higher. The study explicitly shows that for every 20 registrations per 1000 inhabitants, hospital visits were reduced by 3.2%.
A boost for the electric car
One of the doctors of medicine who worked on this survey is Erika Garcia, who explains that this study could increase sales of electric cars, and push governments to invest and take a greater interest in these vehicles. She says :
“ When we think about climate change actions, it’s often at the global level, ” said Garcia. ” But the idea that changes at the local level can improve the health of your community could be a powerful message to the public and decision makers. ”
Sales of electric cars have risen well : in 2013, the cities surveyed have 1.4 electric cars per 1000 inhabitants on average. In 2019 it was 14.6, so there was a significant reduction in pollution-related health issues.
