Coupe du Monde 2022

It’s official, the FIFA World Cup started Sunday. Artists, brands, even some countries have been calling for its boycott for months. The South Korean manufacturer, Hyundai, decided to support the 22nd edition.

Long before it began, the 2022 World Cup was linked to humanitarian and ecological scandals. Starting with the inhumane working conditions imposed on the workers during the construction of the stadiums. Over 6,500 workers have died, revealed the Guardian. In addition to these disastrous deaths, the environmental aspect is a disaster.

The organisers and the International Football Association (FIFA) have nevertheless announced « aiming for carbon neutrality » for the first time in the history of this championship. It’s hard to believe in view of the seven open-air air-conditioned stadiums built, and 160 daily Qatar Airways flights to move fans. In terms of the carbon emissions, officials suggest that 3.6 million tonnes of CO2 will be emitted during the competition. But this figure, might be much lower than the reality according to several NGOs. It could even be multiplied by five.

Hyundai to the rescue ?

To help the situation, one of the event’s official sponsors, Hyundai, supplied 236 electric and hybrid vehicles to Qatar. The Hyundai IONIQ 5, Genesis G80 EV and Genesis GV70 EV are used for VIP and staff travel. A Hyundai Elec City bus is available to transport media and players on site.

To power these vehicles, charging stations have been installed on the roadside and in the car parks. Unfortunately, Hyundai is not going to save the carbon emissions. Before the start of the competition, Qatar wanted to launch 2,000 projects dedicated to the development of renewable energy. Only three of them have been validated.

But none will succeed in preventing the ecological catastrophe that is this edition of the FIFA World Cup.
