Early in 2023, Elon Musk announced that Tesla was planning to build a new Gigafactory in Mexico. Since then, the project has made some progress, but there are still hurdles to overcome.

Mexico is ready, but Tesla is hesitant

The Mexican government has already taken steps to support the project. It has granted Tesla a land use permit and announced the construction of infrastructure in the region. The state of Nuevo León, where the factory will be built, plans to spend $130 million on roads, a gas pipeline, railway spurs, and water and sewer services.

Tesla, on the other hand, seems more hesitant. Elon Musk said in October that he was hesitant to “go all-in” on the project, due to “economic uncertainty.” He recently said that Tesla is “preparing the ground to start construction and carry out all the long-term work.”

A $5 billion Gigafactory?

The cost of the Mexican Gigafactory is estimated at $5 billion. It is expected to be one of the largest electric vehicle factories in the world. Tesla has not yet released its budget projections for this project.

The factory is intended to help Tesla accelerate the development of the Model 2

The Mexican Gigafactory is intended to help Tesla accelerate the development of the Model 2, an affordable electric car that will be aimed at emerging markets. For Mexico, the factory is a sign that the trend of “nearshoring” is taking off. The country is well-positioned to become an important production hub for electric vehicles.

What will Elon Musk decide?

Elon Musk’s final decision to launch construction of the Mexican Gigafactory will depend on several factors, including the evolution of the global economy. If the economy stabilizes, it is likely that Tesla will commit to the project.
