Kia Sportage, the star SUV of the Korean brand, has just arrived on the roads with a brand new generation. More modern, it takes the technical bases of the Hyundai Tucson and it is the turn of the plug-in hybrid version to see the day. Unlike the simple hybrid version, the Sportage PHEV uses the same mechanical configuration. It features a 1.6-liter gasoline engine with 180 hp and a 91 hp electric motor. In total, it develops 265 hp for 350 Nm of torque, via an all-wheel drive by mechanical shaft.

In the floor, between the two rows of seats, is the battery with a net capacity of 13.8 kWh. According to the WLTP protocol, the Kia Sportage PHEV is able to announce a range of 70 km while the Tucson claims 62 km. Like the Tucson, Kia’s plug-in hybrid SUV does not have an additional heater and could light its candles to keep the cabin warm in winter, and we still regret the absence of a reinforced regenerative braking mode (B mode).

On the consumption side, no surprise either. Like the Toyota group’s plug-in hybrids, the Sportage chooses to operate as a simple hybrid vehicle by default. The HEV mode, which is activated when the battery can no longer drive the EV mode, allows itself a low discharge capacity and is then similar to an eSave mode: the charge level will remain strictly the same over the kilometers. To take advantage of a traditional system, you’ll have to select Auto mode, which alternates between HEV and EV modes depending on the roads you drive on. As far as recharging is concerned, it comes standard with a 7.2 kW charger that allows you to fill up in 1 hour 45 minutes at a charging station.
