But what is E85 ?
E85 fuel, also known as superethanol, is a blend of a biofuel, ethanol, and SP95 gasoline.
In 2022, the famous superethanol intrigued more than one Frenchman: in 2022, its consumption increased by 83%. In the gasoline fuel sales market, its share reached 6.5% in one year.
So what are his assets? First, drivers can quickly adapt their petrol car to the E85 with a conversion kit. That explains its success. In 2022, 85,000 boxes of superethanol were installed. That is three times more than in 2021. This conversion is an investment since it costs about €1,000. But this amount is quickly profitable for the prices at the pump. We must not forget that the E85 leads to an increase in consumption of about 20%, which is not negligible.
There are Flexfuel vehicles, directly used with superethanol. There are 35,000 vehicles like that sold in 2022. While this is six times more than in 2021, the market is mainly driven by Ford, which alone sold 30,000. This helped the brand to adapt to a changing market.
What other alternative ?
Of course, keeping in mind the prohibition of sales of new thermal vehicles by 2035, the purchase of an electric car remains an attractive option. The ecological bonus, although lower since 2023, is still in effect. Some insurance also offers a conversion premium.
