Toyota is actively preparing its next generation of electric vehicles, with a planned release in 2026, aiming to catch up in the electrification market.

This new strategy will include a family of five models, including a compact car, a large sedan, two SUVs, and a minivan, for both Toyota and its luxury brand, Lexus. To improve range, Toyota will focus on vehicle aerodynamics using artificial intelligence to shape their silhouettes, while designers will add their unique touches.

In terms of design, Toyota is taking inspiration from Tesla by adopting a new three-part structure to simplify production and reduce the number of components. The centerpiece of this strategy is a new generation of lithium-ion batteries, including a “Performance” version that promises a range of about 1000 km, a 20% cost reduction compared to current batteries, and a fast charging time of only 20 minutes.

Additionally, Toyota is also preparing a more affordable LFP battery with a 20% improved range and a 40% cost reduction.

In the longer term, Toyota is working on solid-state battery technology, aiming for a range of 1200 km and a charging time of only 10 minutes, with plans for mass production around 2027/2028. The new strategy will be initiated by Lexus, which will unveil a concept for a large sedan later this year, laying the foundation for this new electric era.
