Is BMW going to get energy off the road ?

According to several sources and patent filings, the German manufacturer is in the process of creating a system that recovers energy through road deformations.

Can we produce energy with road deformations ? The idea had already been put forward by Giga Performance with the Roadkill 5000 system : a device placed on the level suspension, with the movements and oscillations would produce energy that would extend the range of the electric vehicle.

Now BMW is interested in this subject with a patent application.

What does this German revolution provide for ?

The German manufacturer is developing a system that will create energy with all the deformations of the road. This new energy will go directly to the battery.

But concretely, how will it work ?

So, to explain this system, we have to use the principle of waves.

The electric car in motion, captures the energy that is released, when the vehicle rolls on a bump for example. This energy recovered, will turn a generator connected to the clutch, to make electricity. It will then be to the battery.

On roads with particularly damaged pavement, this would be the same efficiency as regenerative braking in large descents. This energy recovery will not compensate for the energy consumed, because it is too large, but would help to extend the autonomy. The release of this famous system has not yet been mentioned by BMW, but the price could work as a subscription.

To remember :

BMW works on developing a system that will create energy through deformations on the road
A device placed on the suspension of the electric vehicle would pass the energy into a generator to create electricity and send it directly to the battery
Energy would be used to extend the range of the electric vehicle
BMW has not yet openly talked about it but has filed a patent
This system could be used through a paid subscription
