Envision AESC Group, a Chinese battery producer, plans to manufacture batteries for vehicles with a
range of up to 1,000 km, starting in 2024. To be able to announce a range of 1,000 km on the WLTP
cycle, a battery of at least 150 kWh is needed, whereas the largest current car battery, that of the
Mercedes EQS, has a maximum capacity of 107 kWh. And a 150 kWh battery would weigh around
1,000 kg and be huge.

Envision, the world’s seventh-largest battery supplier, is also working to improve storage efficiency
in order to reduce charging times by about 30 percent, to under 20 minutes. Today, the best
performing car in terms of charging speed – the Porsche Taycan – accepts a maximum of 270 kW
between 5 and 45 percent of its capacity. After that, the charging power is gradually reduced to
avoid damaging the battery.

Envision will set up a new factory near Tokyo, a production site powered solely by solar panels and
therefore advertised as having zero CO2 emissions. With this new battery technology, Envision aims
to dominate about 50% of global transactions by 2025.
