Mercedes-Benz’s next all-electric luxury car, the 2023 EQE sedan, will follow closely on the heels of the introduction of the 2022 Mercedes EQS flagship and will arrive in the United States in late 2022. As the EQS is the electric equivalent of the S-Class, the 2023 Mercedes EQE is the electric equivalent of the E-Class. In prototype form, it was 5 m long, 1.96 m wide and 1.5 m high.

The EQE is based on the same dedicated electric vehicle platform as the EQS and has a remarkably long wheelbase of 3.12 meters. This allows for a significant increase in cabin and occupant space. While the EQE doesn’t have the same rear-seat features as the EQS, such as heated/ventilated seats and power reclining features, it’s a very comfortable space and large enough for long trips.

We rode in an EQE 350+, the rear-drive version with a single permanent magnet motor at the rear wheels producing 288 horsepower and 530 N-m of torque. Mercedes claims it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 200 km/h. This version of the sedan will arrive first, followed by an all-wheel-drive version at a date yet to be determined.

The AMG EQE performance model will arrive in early 2023, offering a dual-engine AWD configuration that makes 617 hp and 950 N-m, or up to 677 hp and 1,000 N-m with the boost mode that is part of the Dynamic Plus package. Mercedes claimed a 0-100 km/h time of 3.2 seconds with this package. A flat 90.6 kwh lithium-ion battery sits under the floor and apparently uses a very large portion of its energy as usable capacity. Mercedes-Benz claims a range of 410 miles based on the European WLTP cycle.

The EQE, like the EQS, offers the Hyperscreen layout, consisting of a 45-cm central OLED screen and two 31-cm screens, one for the dashboard and one for the passenger, all framed in glass that gives the impression of a single interface. The base configuration includes a 30 cm central OLED touchscreen and a 30 cm instrument cluster. The interface includes a “zero-layer” approach that reduces menu navigation, and available augmented video can assist with navigation by overlaying an image of the location. And 64-color LED interior lighting will help set the desired mood in the cabin.
