Recent developments concerning the total ban on the sale of combustion engine vehicles in Europe by 2035 have had a more unexpected effect on the automotive landscape: the renaissance of city cars. Once out of fashion because they were too unprofitable, these cars are now making a comeback, with electric engines that are totally consistent with their mainly urban use. These include the Honda e and the new generation of the Fiat 500.

German manufacturers are also working on the development of new trendy models, especially Audi. Indeed, the firm has greatly expanded its range, with the e-tron and e-tron Sportback, the Q4 e-tron as well as the e-tron GT and its RS version, cousin of the Porsche Taycan. But the brand with the rings does not intend to stop there, since it also plans to launch a model below the A1 in the city car segment.

This information was confirmed by Oliver Hoffmann, a member of the Audi board of directors, to our colleagues at Automobilwoche. “We will electrify all major segments by 2027 […] This includes the A segment, where we clearly see the need for premium electric vehicles in the future.”

For now, information is still scarce about this future Audi city car, whose name has not yet been revealed. However, everything suggests that it will be based on the new platform developed by the Volkswagen Group, which will be ready in 2026. This platform should then also equip its next technical cousins from Seat and Skoda, as well as the future Volkswagen ID.1. This newcomer to the Audi range should undoubtedly be launched in 2026.
