The two Japanese groups plan to form a joint venture this year to develop and sell “high-value battery electric vehicles” and jointly provide mobility services.  Honda will be responsible for manufacturing the first model in its own factories, while Sony will develop a platform dedicated to mobility services. “Although Sony and Honda have many historical and cultural similarities, our areas of technological expertise are very different. That’s why I believe that this alliance, by combining the strengths of our two companies, will offer great opportunities for the future of mobility,” said Toshihiro Mibe, CEO of Honda.

Honda had announced on this occasion to increase the share of its electric vehicles (running on electric batteries or hydrogen) to 40% by 2030, 80% by 2035 and 100% by 2040 in North America and China. It is also already a partner of the American giant General Motors in new automotive technologies, including autonomous vehicles. Sony has not hidden for several years its growing desire to become a full-fledged player in the automotive market, to which it already supplies image sensors, audiovisual equipment and other high-tech products.

The group caused a sensation at the CES show in Las Vegas in January 2020 by unveiling a concept electric car called “Vision S”, with autonomous driving equipment. Also at CES in Las Vegas, it presented a new prototype of its Vision S and announced the creation of a new subsidiary, “Sony Mobility”, for the spring of 2022 to “explore the possibility of entering the electric vehicle market”. Around the world, carmakers are trying to make the shift to electric vehicles, while many countries are tightening their targets for reducing CO2 emissions.
